Book Review

I recently finished two books. Here are some brief thoughts.

I became a John Maxwell fan after reading, "Developing the Leader Within." His book, "Becoming a Person of Influence" (My picture tab isn't working, so you'll have to go to Amazon and check it out.) is a fantastic book on how to care for and lead others. It's not only full of practical steps on how to care for people in easy to understand language and format, but it has excellent examples, and an easy to read review at the end to help remind the reader of the important stuff should he need to come back for a refresher. I also felt like the stuff he was teaching is easy to incorporate into my life, not difficult, time consuming ideas. I especially liked his chapter on mentoring. It not only reminded me of the need to put mentoring at the top of the list of how I care for students, but it also gave me clear directions on how to do it that were in harmony with what I learned from Bo Bosher's book, "The Be-With Factor."

"Well-Intentioned Dragons: Ministering to Problem People in the Church" by Marshall Shelley has been a timely book for Shari and I. This quote is the heart of the book: "The rest of this book deals with various kinds of dragons, their tactics, and the ways to handle them. But from the beginning a premise stands clear: the goal in handling dragons is not to destroy them, not merely to disassociate, but to make them disciples. Even when that seems an unlikely prospect" (p. 34). Not only did I find tremendous help in how to care for people who are well intentioned but sometimes create pain and misunderstandings in their wake, but I also saw areas where I myself am a "well-intentioned dragon," and need to do better at being a help to my pastors and the leaders of our church, and not a drain. An excellent book for any in church leadership. You can also find high recommendations here.

I have begun to reread Bo Bosher's book, "The Be-With Factor." On top of that (and all the blog I read), I'm also using, "A Year With C.S. Lewis: Daily Readings From His Classic Works" and, "My Utmost for His Highest." I may also add a second book to the mix, or I may wait until after I've read Bosher's. That will be Maxwell's, "Developing the Leaders Around You."
