More From Chap. 5

Here are some more quotes from Chapter 5 of Tim Hansel's book, "What Kids Need Most In A Dad."

"Our kids need large doses of adventure in order to change, discover, and grow. If they aren't sufficiently challenged by real-life adventures, they will seek and find other fictitious adventures of signiciantly less value."

The best way I know to bring new adventure and exuberance into our daily existence is by daring to risk, daring to grow, daring to let go of someo of those attachments we have allowed to limit us for so long."

Some thoughts...

Dads (and moms) need those types of risks and adventures, too. The temptations will always be there to take unhealthy, fictitious adventures if we don't live life as an adventure. And the reality is that often times living life safe - doing what wisdom might dictate according to our world's standards, or even according to what seems to be Biblical, isn't always healthy. Stepping out of the boat to walk on water is risky, adventurous, and called by Jesus, but it's certainly not safe or wise from the outside looking in.

Taking risks and adventures is great, but you have to have an attitude of praise and trust to do it well. One can't do those things with complaints, whining, or a martyr complex and expect God to work in and through them, even if He's the one who's called you. Attitude matters just as much as actions. Yes, this is from experience. In living life, I have looked back at how I've approached things and realized that sometimes I've missed God, not because I haven't done the right thing, but because my attitude hasn't been Godly.

With that in mind, Shari and I must set the example for an attitude of excitement as we step into another new adventure, as short as it probably will be. A year ago we took on the role of foster parenting outside the state system by caring for two kids whose mom was going to prison. That lasted only a couple of weeks I think. Almost exactly a year later we are doing it again. Quite frankly, we don't expect it to last any longer than last time do to the circumstances involved. However, it will be an adventure in caring for orphans and widows (of a sort), and we must do so with a spirit of praise to our God for the opportunity, not complaining about all the changes we'll have to make, or whining about how wonderful we are to suffer for Jesus like this.

God, we can't even serve you well, or bear the fruit of your Spirit, apart from your help and intervention in our lives. Would you please help us to praise you in this new adventure. Help me, as a dad and husband, to lead the way in how I approach this adventure with my attitude. Help me to call my family to a higher attitude, while also being careful not to become prideful about it, or to push them too hard w/o some sort of encouragement or sympathy, as the family doesn't get a break from the daily living with 2 new kids that I get by going to work.

Thank you, God, for this opportunity. Help us all to make the most of it by being a light to some kids who haven't had much of Christ's love in their lives, especially lately.
