New Role
I was hired on as the Office Manager at Grace Harvest Church. Since then, my job has continued to morph. Within a few months, based on the different jobs that needed done, "Sunday Service Coordinator" was added to my job title. Last week, after much prayer (see my last post), Shari and I agreed to add, "G.R.A.C.E Group Directors" to our list of roles. We are tremendously excited about this one, even more than any other.
We feel passionate about it, for starters. We believe in G.R.A.C.E. Groups, which are really a form of a small group ministry. We want to encourage people to lead groups, and create a wide variety of them. We want to encourage people to take part in small groups. We want to care for the leaders well. Small groups, especially in a church of over 200 (and we're over 300) is really where the discipleship is going to be happening because, as great as Sunday mornings are, that's not discipleship. That's worship, and learning and growing occurs there, but discipleship is about relationship that leads to spiritual growth, and you can't have that type of relationship while standing around listening to somebody preach at you.
We're also excited about this role because it will allow us to enter into more of a pastoral role again. We've missed caring for people. We've tried doing so on the side, especially by leading a small group ourselves. However, this will allow us more of an open door for that sort of thing.
Our next step is interviewing the different coaches (five people who have been endeavoring to disciple small group leaders) to learn from them the strengths and weaknesses of the current ways things are done. In addition, we've got to figure out who is already leading a group, and make sure that we step up and start caring for them. I'm going to have to start delegating my role a bit more in the office, especially those things that can be farmed out to others with computers. Next step: finding more volunteers.
