Caring for those left behind

Last night a friend's husband died. We've never met the gentleman, but we have gotten to know his wife fairly well. Shari went by the hospital to visit on her way to a women's Bible study, and walked in within minutes of his death. What do you say in those moments? This poor woman is broken and hurting, with a ton of conflicting emotions. We've gotten to know her, but nothing like her close friends. So Shari did the best thing she could do: She was simply there. She prayed. She hugged. But, most importantly, she was there. It didn't feel like much, but, in those moments, people don't need a lot of folks offering words, or even very many offering actions (except maybe meals and babysitting, if appropriate). They just need presence, and not for very long periods of time, but many times over time. We continue to pray for our friend, who shall remain nameless for now, due to the freshness of the event.
