Date Night!
Last weekend, Shari and I were able to combine "business" with pleasure. We went to enjoy the Sentinel H.S. choir, which two of our girls are in. They put on a concert, "Dazzled by Disney." It was a relaxing and enjoyable evening of a variety of Disney numbers, including such favorites as, "When You Wish Upon A Star," "Be Our Guest," and the always popular classic, "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious." (That was a fun one to type.) That was especially fun to watch, as Alyssa was in it, and she did an excellent job, as did the two young men singing with her. We also won three free games of bowling for the boys, which was an added bonus. They actually did two concerts that night, as this was a major fundraiser for the choir. We went to the early show, with a light dessert right before.
So we were done around 7:30, and headed over to Tony and Cindy's house to enjoy some time just hanging out, while thanking them for watching our kids. We truly appreciate these good friends, who have captured our hearts, and who allow us to be deep or shallow, as the mood hits us. Likewise, we connect, and are able to care for, encourage, correct, and challenge them, too. We are so thankful for the heart connection there.
After a drought of date nights, this was our second in a week, and we are genuinely thankful for the opportunity. It was a wonderful way to end the week, even if we did get home late and sleep little because of daylight savings time. It was worth it.
One of the songs they sung at the concert actually struck Shari and I as we thought about how many hurting kids we see and care for, in jail and in church. I've embedded the lyrics here. I've never seen Disney's version of "The Hunchback of Notre Dame," as it lies in the in-between time when we weren't really into the Disney movies coming out, and our kids weren't old enough to be either... or maybe we just didn't have a VCR for them. Amazing that this song proclaimed the Gospel at a public school, yet they may not have even realized it. God's truth is proclaimed, one way or another.
