Fun Stuff from Jr. High Retreat
God did some great things at the jr. high retreat last weekend. An overnight trip is just the right length for jr. highers - leaving before they're totally exhausted, yet long enough that they open up and allow God to speak to them. I've already commented on some of the teachable moments God opened up. Here are some of the crazier moments we had, and not all of them can be blamed on jr. highers.
We had a great time playing games all Saturday afternoon. The highlight was sardines. Despite the forecast, the weather was great, and we were able to play outside for several hours. We found kids in the van, behind a mound of dirt, and behind a bush. We never did find Julie, one of the staff, so she'll probably use that hiding place again. Bummer. What cracked up the staff was some of the girls inability to understand the concept of sardines: to find the person hiding, then endeavor to stay hidden with them as long as possible, i.e. w/o making noise. It's like once they found somebody, they felt like they were done, and proceeded to carry on conversations. The staff simply chuckled. The kids were having fun, so that's what mattered.
Have you ever been pepper sprayed. Julie found a small, purse-sized spray bottle in her room Sat. afternoon, the type somebody might carry for self-defence. She brought it to Shari. Shari, being the curious type, wondered how it worked. It was only a little shot in a very large building, with very high ceilings. She sprayed it away from herself, of course. Didn't matter. She cleared that building out in about 1 minute as the pepper spread throughout the place. That stuff is amazing. We ended up having our evening talk around the campfire outside. It was a great experience, and we're all thankful for the campfire time, but I think we all know now why those spray work so well against thieves, assault, etc. I was still coughing three hours later, and the pepper smell didn't go away until the next morning.
Those were the play highlights of the weekend that I can think of. Thanks to all who prayed.
