One step closer to becoming residents

Yesterday I sat in line (I'm thankful the government provides seating) for only about 15-20 minutes. At the end of that time I had a temporary driver's license for myself, a temporary license plate for the van, and a permanent plate for our Mustang. That's right - permanent. Montana has a great law for cars over 11 years old. If you pay a bit more (about three years in advance for the Mustang), you can get "permanent" tabs. This means that I never have to pay for tabs again. WooHoo! So, we are now one step closer to being true Montana residents. Shari will probably get her license next Monday.

For the record, I'd also like to say that every government worker I talked with was friendly (not just civil) and helpful, like they actually valued me as a customer, instead of looking down on me as a peon. It was a great experience. Now we just need to get our new title from WA-DMV for the van, and we can get the plates for that one, too.

We continue to be amazed - We're in Montana. We're working in Montana. I am no longer a Washington resident. Weird. Amazing. Fun. Beautiful.

  • Paul,

You mentioned 15-20 so you must have been in Missoula. Stevensille's office is 2-7 and they're just a friendly. Can't help with the tags since that's done by county but if Shari only has to get her license it's be worht the try... and it's a nicer drive than to the "big" city.

  • Thanks, Ed. We'll check it out on Monday. We have to wait for the title to our van from WA before we can finish the plate process for the van.
