Another accident... Only It's Not Matthew!

I wish I had a picture of this. You'll simply have to use your imagination. Sorry.

During my time at the directors' retreat, the boys were at Stonewater Ranch with me, being cared for one of the YD Adventure couples. The D'Atres are great folks, with two girls and two boys of their own. Rick runs our Polar Bear trips, and I truly respect him as a man of God, and now i respect him and Melissa as Godly parents, too.

So, they're out riding around, and one of my boys decides to try out Rick's oldest's bike. This is a nice mountain bike, with shocks, strong wheels, and hand brakes. My boys have never used hand brakes. They have coaster brakes (that's where you pedal backwards to brake). They've never used shocks on a bike either, but that's irrelevant to this story. So, they begin riding, and said son starts down a hill. He starts gathering speed. He's heading for some bushes. Can you picture him instinctively trying to hit the brakes... the coaster brakes. Yeah, he didn't have a chance to figure it out. Thankfully, the bike wasn't hurt.

Okay, you've probably guessed anyway, but it was fun pretending that I was keeping you in suspense. Michael flew over the handlebars and did some serious damage to his stomach. There was also serious, temporary damage to his emotional heart. I had to exit a meeting for a short time to simply hold him. He was shaking pretty seriously. He ended up with no internal damage (a serious concern we had), and the wound only looked like a large rasberry, with a couple deeper holes. It wasn't until later that day that the bruise became pretty noticable. We thank God for keeping our little guy safe from harm, while giving him a great ride. He did get back on his bike, which I'm thankful for, and hasn't slowed down since. We'll work on hand brakes with his next bike.

I bring this up primarily for one reason (I probably wouldn't have posted this w/o a picture otherwise), though the fact that it was Michael and not Matthew is noteworthy. Still, here's the primary reason.

As I'm walking away (after calming him down for about 15 minutes), I mention that this will make a great story to show and tell mom when she gets home (working to distract him with a funny thought... which probably hurt when he laughed. Bad idea). Anyway, Michael, ever the humble young man, says (shouts, rather), "Yeah, and it will be a great story to put on your blog, too, dad!" So, there you have it.

PS It would also have been fun for you to see the bandage I made after we returned home. I couldn't find any medical tape. I'm a youth pastor and a typical man. So, I took a 2x2 piece of gauze and... well, it only left a little residue on his tummy, and it looked cool and silver.
